My Microblading Experience

My Microblading Experience

Who would have ever thought that eyebrows would be all the rage these days?  I remember when oversized light jean overalls and grungy plaid button ups tied around the waist were the hotness!  I must say that I’m happy to be an adult now rather than the 90s when I was a kiddo.  Looking back on all the amazing fashion trends of my childhood usually make me cringe although some are still adorable.

I’m so excited to bring you guys my entire experience with this new trend going around called microblading!  First of all, what exactly is microblading?  Microblading is a semi-permanent makeup procedure that dramatically corrects or fully reconstructs lost eyebrows.  It’s performed by manually depositing pigment under the top layer of the skin by a blade.  Microblading does not involve the use of a tattoo machine.  A few of the bloggers and mama friends I have had this done and I was so curious about it.  A little back story about why I have always hated my brows:  When I was 13 years old for my birthday my Mom took me to get my eyebrows waxed for the first time ever.  Well, little did either of us know that our aesthetician had never done an eyebrow waxing before and was completely doing it wrong.  Instead of pulling in the opposite direction of the hair growth, she pulled with the direction and also had wax everywhere, hence screwing up my brows forever.  Not only was the wax literally stuck on my skin above my eyelid for days while we tried and tried to painstakingly remove it little by little, but the area that DID get hairs pulled out were from places that the wax had dripped accidentally.  Needless to say, my brows were deformed and have been ever since.  I was terrified to attempt waxing again, was an over plucker, and used the wrong products to fill in my brows for the longest time.  When I finally decided it was time to start trying to fill in my brows to make them fit my face shape it was of course a learning process.  I went through several colors trying to match my hair color and so so many attempts at making my brows look natural.

Anyway, long story, short: I began filling in my brows what all sorts of different products in 2007 and continued that route for 10 years.  I spent so much time every single day on my brows, sometimes doing them multiple times a day if they sweated off or if I went swimming, etc.  Once I had Emily in 2014, even though I had been filling in my brows daily for seven years and felt like I had it down to a science, having to do my brows daily with a child seemed impossible some days.  It was unfortunate because I didn’t feel confident and like myself without my brows done.  Once our second child came along in 2016 I was over it.  I had seen a few people talk about microblading and knew after a little research that I would really benefit from having it done.  Someone told me after I had the procedure that I was “too vain” for going through with it but in reality, something like this is not at all about being vain.  There are all kinds of reasons for someone to look into microblading.  Eyebrows are sometimes looked over as an important part of the face but think about this; What stands out to you when you look at someone?  Their nose, hair, mouth?  What makes you remember someone most of the time?  Their eyes!  A person’s eyes are the most distinguishing feature of the whole body in my opinion.

 On to my microblading experience.

One of my good friends and I were talking and she mentioned how she’d just had microblading done by Rikki from Secret Brow Society.  I had heard about microblading before, like I said, but was surprised to learn that someone around our area was providing the service since most of the time the people I’ve talked to have been from Los Angeles.  I contacted Rikki through Instagram which is where you can find a ton of her before and after photos and she was so sweet!  We set up a date and time for everything that same day.

Before I went in I took before photos to compare, of course.

HOW ADORABLE IS THIS PLACE?!

HOW ADORABLE IS THIS PLACE?!

When I pulled into the facility and in Rikki’s office, everything was so clean and there was a super peaceful atmosphere.

One of the things I liked most about this procedure was how Rikki didn’t hesitate at all to choose the color that matched my brows.  I was worried I’d be “in charge” of choosing.  I was Rikki’s first appointment of the day and it took about 15 minutes to get everything ready with our gabbing going on.  I laid back and Rikki started marking my brows out, making sure they were even and that they fit my face shape, once she was finished, she let me look to make sure I thought they looked good!  Next came the beginning of the procedure!  Rikki was giving me al little insight on how microblading is done and what kind of choices, regarding the blades used, she had.  I was so happy to learn that Rikki uses the BEST blade in the industry, The Harmony Blade created by Tina Davies.  I learned long ago that in most cases the old saying, “You get what you pay for.”, holds true and that is no different with microblading blades.  Once Rikki began basically carving into my face, for lack of a better term, I was honestly surprised at how little pain I felt.  It sounded like Velcro being pulled apart.  What helped me relax was closing my eyes and breathing but once my endorphins kicked in it really was nothing.

Rikki spent around 30 minutes performing the procedure, maybe more time, and once she was finished I was surprised that my face wasn’t red, I hadn’t cried, I didn’t feel exhausted.  I actually stopped for lunch at good old Chick-Fil-A afterwards and felt totally fine.  There was a tiny bit of bleeding immediately afterwards but Rikki made sure I knew that was 100% normal.

THE HARMONY BLADES!

THE HARMONY BLADES!

Healing was super simple.  The first few days since the pigment was so strong, my brows were darker than they are healed but they still looked amazing then.  Luckily, I was wearing my bangs pretty long then so they were able to be covered a bit during the healing process.  The hardest part was NOT picking at the scabs coming off because it itched!  Just like when someone gets a tattoo, your skin goes through a healing process, and tattoos itch too.  The Harmony Blade doesn’t go nearly as deep as a tattoo needle though, so healing didn’t seem to take as long for me.  You’re told not to get your brows wet for a week, which, yes, while showering they got a little wet, but it’s not like I dunked my head in a pool!  After about a week, all the scabs were gone and the pigment had lightened to match my hair really well.  I’ve absolutely loved the results!  I can’t explain how amazing it is and how much time I know I’m saving everyday by waking up and already having my brows done.  It’s not being vain, it’s about being confident with something on my face that I have always hated and tried to hide.  Now I love showing off my brows and telling everyone about my microblading!

When I researched microblading across the country I found that costs for the procedure run anywhere from $300-$1700.  Of course the area’s standard of living goes into that determination as well as your microblader’s skill level.  All of Rikki’s prices can be found below and if you’re local and mention you saw this post, you get $50.00 off!
