Keto: Three Week Update

Welp, today marks the three week mark of my keto diet journey.  I'm not going to lie and say was the absolute easiest thing I've ever done because c'mon, I WANT ICE CREAM!  It is however the easiest diet I've ever tried once I got the hang of it.  

I've lost a total of 11.5 pounds.  I know that could be water weight but still, I'll take it!  I notice that I look different in certain areas and people have told me unprompted that they can tell I've lost weight.  That's always nice to hear!   

I've found two restaurants that I love going to if I don't feel like cooking and have some extra time: Chick Fil A and Qdoba!  I am able to pretty much get what I normally would get at both of these places so I don't really even feel like I'm dieting.  I'll list below what I get at each place and the macro breakdowns.  Scott and I have started going on Wednesday dates and we hit up Texas Roadhouse once.  Other than their devil bread (because it's like, the best thing in the world and don't get me started on the cinnamon butter) it was super easy to stay on track.  

My downfalls these first three weeks?  So I love ice cream and dairy.  Nothing even happened in our lives where I felt like I needed  to turn to food for comfort but man, I cheated and I cheated good.  There were two days that I went all out having Mexican for lunch, chips and queso, McDonald's, and then ice cream for dinner.  Trust me, it was amazing.  I felt guilty afterwards but thought to myself, why beat yourself up?  You're human.  I'm not "happy" about my choices but it DID teach me something that I try my hardest to remember when I get cravings for those foods.  First off the McDonald's, the fries tasted gross like I was eating over processed oil.  I couldn't even eat more than about 10 before throwing them out.  The burger was NOT good.  I think I've lost my taste for ketchup, even in a couple weeks, and it was just a no-go for me.  There was no real flavor there.  I also ended up getting a regular Coke instead of my former addiction of Diet Coke because our dietician explained why diet is even worse than regular and I finally understood it.  The Coke, yes, it was amazing ha, not gonna lie about that one!  When I met up with my girlfriend and had Mexican for lunch it was really good, real flavors and all.  Of course the part I love most is the cheese and I can have cheese so I just need to figure out a good chip replacement!  Now on to the ice cream.  Y'all... I love ice cream.  I find it SO strange that my husband can only eat a little bit at a time because I could literally eat a whole half gallon alone in one sitting.  That's just, always going to be my vice and I'll never get over it.  

A tip for keto:

Get the temptations out of your home!  I discovered Halo Top ice cream and it changed my life, although I do have to save half my carbs to have 1/4 cup but still worth it some days.  Trust me, check out the chocolate!  Anyway, Emily doesn't "like" chocolate and wanted vanilla one day so I run out and grab some.  She has her little ice cream cone and I KNOW the rest of that ice cream is sitting in our freezer.  I literally couldn't stop myself from eating it.  All of it, at once.  I guess I could've thrown it away but my semi-frugal heart wouldn't allow that.  After I had that ice cream, and the Mexican... and the McDonald's, I felt horrible!  My energy dropped, my stomach hurt, I was having headaches for a couple days.  Not to mention I had to spend the next couple days getting myself back into ketosis, which all in all wasn't hard, but still.  So like I said, rid yourself of temptation that's in your home and keto will be so much easier for you!

I've found some awesome recipes that I'll post soon, too.  Scott joined in on the keto craze as well about two weeks ago!  I'm so happy about that knowing I have a confidant who I can swap ideas with and who will actually be eating the same thing as me.  Having good support is of course a necessity in any aspect of life, so, super excited about having him on board.   

As for date nights and doing things as a family we've come to realize that food and going to dinner or lunch isn't going to be an "activity" for us anymore like before.  Food is to fuel your body and that's it.  I'd much rather pack up some snacks for the kiddos and go to the park for a picnic and playtime, or go play putt-putt, or walk around our downtown canal, anything active and just getting out of the house making memories is so much more valuable to me than a pint of ice cream.
